Heat Relief Blitz: Iloilo City Launches Cooling Hubs, Water Distribution

Iloilo City is launching strategically placed cooling centers to provide immediate relief from the rising heat index. Mayor Raisa Treñas categorized the move as a vital short-term intervention, complementing long-term climate goals like intensified tree-planting.

The strategy follows a recent benchmarking mission to Thailand, where city officials studied international best practices for managing extreme urban temperatures.

The training, attended by representatives from the Office of the City Agriculturist, Office of the City Planning and Development, and the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, also included strategies on setting up cooling centers.

Instead of building new infrastructure, Iloilo City will identify and convert existing spaces into temporary cooling hubs for immediate relief. This agile approach ensures rapid deployment while the city’s departments collaborate to finalize a comprehensive implementation strategy.

Mayor Treñas further noted that the city’s heat response will integrate Councilor Alan Zaldivar’s resolution on Heat Safety Protocols to ensure standardized protection for the public.

Alongside these measures, the city continues its water distribution efforts, prioritizing neighborhoods with limited access to a stable water supply.
