Uswag Scholarship helps poor Ilonggo students pursue their education

Education is among the most important basic needs that people should have to help them uplift their lives. Many poor students in Iloilo City face the challenge of having a good education, a problem that was provided with a solution by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas when he launched Uswag Scholarship.

The Uswag Scholarship Program is part of Iloilo City’s W.H.E.E.L.S. ON THE GO roadmap (Welfare, Health, Environment, Education, Livelihood, Sustainability) under Education. Under the program, underprivileged but deserving students were provided financial assistance for them to pursue their education.

Treñas started this program in 2010 that eventually created a roster of professionals in various fields to help build a better nation. The program has helped thousands of young Ilonggos continue their studies and achieve their dreams and ambitions.

This July, a thousand more scholars received financial aid.

“Dugang naman ka mga 1,000 nga mga scholar ang nakabaton sang bulig pinansyal nga P5,000.00 nga aton ginapanagtag kada semester para makabulig sa aton mga kabataan nga malab-ot ang ila handum nga propesyon,” Treñas said.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas believes that there is no substitute to formal education that’s why as much as possible, he encourages everyone to finish a degree because it’s easier to find a decent job if you have a diploma.

Anybody, despite of his/her political orientation and preference, is welcome to be part of the Uswag Scholarship Program. Residents of Iloilo City who are Senior High School Graduates, High School Graduates under old Department of Education (DepEd) curriculum, or already in College Level may avail of the scholarship.
