The City Government of Iloilo continues the market rehabilitation in the different districts of the city. Ilonggos are very pleased with these projects as seen in the excellent net satisfaction rating.
Nine out of 10 or 89.3 percent of residents are satisfied with the renovation of public markets, based on a scientific survey of Random Access Consultants, Inc. (RACI) conducted Feb 3-5 of this year.
“We are happy with the results and we will continue to reach the dreams of every Ilonggo. The priority infrastructure improvement projects, just like the newly-renovated district plazas, are part of WHEELS (Welfare, Health, Education, Environment, Livelihood, Sustainability) Program for inclusive development,” Mayor Jerry Treñas stressed.
“We want our markets to level up and become competitive by providing the public a comfortable and convenient 'mall-setting' establishment with cheaper and bargain products and affordable services,” Treñas added.
The City Government has started implementing construction works on Jaro Big Market, Arevalo Public Market, and La Paz Public Market.
Meanwhile, the modernization of two major public markets in City Proper are underway at no expense to City Hall, which together with SM Prime Holdings are carefully working on the details in developing the Central and Terminal (Super) Markets.
“Comfort rooms, parking facilities and an effective drainage system are being included in the development plans. These will make it easy and accessible for the public when buying their needs in the markets,” Treñas said.
The improvements will likewise solve traffic congestion and perennial flooding in the market area.
The sustainable transformation will introduce an environment-friendly building with the establishment of Sewage Treatment Plant and Materials Recovery Facility which will address wastewater and solid waste management as the markets produce tons of trash.
“The operations will remain with the City Government under the Local Economic Enterprise Office (LEEO), including collection of tax dues. There’s no displacement of vendors as bonafide stall holders are assured of spaces. There might be additional stalls as the facility will become spacious,” Treñas said.
Temporary market relocation will be provided prior to start of construction works to prevent interruption of economic activities.
The redevelopment will liven up the Calle Real or the old business district in downtown and will become a tourist attraction at the center of the metro. (PR)
