Residents, particularly senior citizens, now have greater access to fitness and wellness opportunities with the opening of a dedicated exercise facility at Jaro Plaza on Oct. 22. The project strengthens the Iloilo City Government’s commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles through improved and more inclusive public spaces.
The facility was formally inaugurated in a ceremony attended by Mayor Raisa Treñas, city officials, community leaders, and local residents. It is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to revitalize public plazas and make health and wellness activities more accessible to the public.
Mayor Treñas highlighted the importance of incorporating wellness-focused initiatives into the city’s infrastructure development plans.
“That’s why we are trying to bring health and wellness also to our plazas,” she said.
She noted that while the redevelopment of Jaro Plaza has long been envisioned, establishing a fitness area specifically for senior citizens was a key aspiration that has now been realized through collaboration and community support.
The mayor also shared that similar exercise facilities are being rolled out in other city plazas, including Plaza Libertad and La Paz Plaza, while rehabilitation works continue at Mandurriao Plaza.
Emphasizing the broader purpose of public infrastructure, Treñas stressed that development projects should directly contribute to the well-being of residents.
“Kay para sa akon, ang priority ang health and wellness gid sang tanan. Ano naton ang tanan nga infrastructure naton kon indi maayo ang lawas sang mga pumuluyo naton?” she said.
Treñas likewise expressed gratitude to private-sector partners whose support helped bring the project to fruition and advance initiatives that benefit the wider community.
Earlier, City Architect Regina Gregorio described the facility as a meaningful investment in the health and quality of life of Iloilo City residents.
“These exercise facilities are more than just equipment; they represent our commitment to the health, well-being, and quality of life of our senior citizens and youth,” Gregorio said.
Representing the Uy family, Walter Uy reaffirmed their support for projects that improve public spaces and encourage active lifestyles. He also shared that the family is exploring the possibility of adding recreational facilities for children in the future.
The new exercise area is expected to provide senior citizens and other residents with a safe, accessible, and welcoming venue for physical activity, further enhancing Jaro Plaza as a vibrant community gathering space and promoting a culture of health and wellness among Ilonggos.
